We currently have a .ca site and have high impressions/low clicks in the US - How do we show .co to the US for the same site?

The .com domain is not a feasible option for my company due to the high cost of purchasing the domain name outright. Our .ca domain has over 15 years of authority and generates more impressions for the USA than for Canada. However, our clicks from the US are low, and my boss wants to focus more on the US market.

I am looking for ways to increase our clicks, such as using a .co domain for the US market and making some adjustments to our SEO. Since we do not have a webmaster, I need to figure this out on my own. Is there a way to get Google to display the .co domain for the US without impacting our Canadian .ca domain?

I am hoping to find a solution that does not involve cloning the site or adding localized tags to the header. The company already purchased Elementor for WordPress, and my boss does not want to invest in another license for a duplicated .co site.

A .co domain could potentially help, but it might not be the magic solution you’re looking for. Here’s why:

1. Domain Authority and Brand Recognition: Your .ca domain has 15 years of authority, which is a valuable asset. Switching to .co could dilute this authority, especially if you haven’t built up significant brand recognition with the .co extension in the US.

2. Google’s Algorithm: Google’s algorithm doesn’t automatically prioritize .co domains for the US market. Even with a .co domain, you still need to optimize your website for US-specific search terms and user behavior.

3. Alternative Strategies:

  • Geo-targeting: You can use Google Search Console and Google Analytics to target your website specifically to US users. This involves customizing your content and website structure to appeal to the US audience.
  • Targeted Advertising: Using paid advertising platforms like Google Ads, you can target US users specifically. This can be a quicker way to get your website in front of the right audience.
  • Local SEO: Focus on optimizing your website for local search queries in US cities and regions relevant to your business.

4. .co Domain Considerations:

  • While a .co domain might be cheaper, its association with Colombia could be a hurdle. You might face confusion among US users about your location.
  • A .co domain may also not carry the same level of trustworthiness as a .com, which is generally considered a more established domain extension.

It’s crucial to remember that domain name changes can be time-consuming and require significant SEO effort. Focus on optimizing your .ca website for the US market through content, keywords, and user experience. Consider exploring targeted advertising options and local SEO strategies to reach your US audience.
