Lost 60-70% traffic overnight after moving from WordPress to Shopify

Hello everyone,

I need some assistance with a recent issue I’ve been having. After switching from WordPress to Shopify three days ago, my website’s traffic has plummeted by 600% (from approximately 1,000 visitors per day to only 400). Despite this drop, my top two keywords that generate 90% of my traffic are still maintaining their rankings on the SERP (first page, top position). I have verified that the links for these keywords are functioning correctly.

I have cross-referenced this information with Google Search Console and confirmed that my top three keywords remain ranked #1 with functioning links. Although I have identified some SEO issues such as broken and duplicate links on the SERP, I have already taken steps to address these by hiring someone for the task. However, I am puzzled as to how these issues could drastically affect my traffic when the crucial sales-driving links are still prominently ranked.

Has anyone encountered a similar situation before? Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

This drastic traffic drop after switching from WordPress to Shopify could be due to a few factors beyond just broken links and duplicate content:

  • URL Structure Changes: Moving from WordPress to Shopify likely resulted in changes to your website’s URL structure. Search engines may have difficulty indexing the new URLs, causing a temporary drop in traffic while they adapt.
  • Site Speed and Mobile Responsiveness: Shopify stores are generally known for their speed and mobile optimization. However, improper theme selection, plugin conflicts, or inefficient code can negatively impact performance, leading to lower rankings and traffic.
  • Sitemaps and Robots.txt: Shopify might have a different structure for sitemaps and robots.txt files, which are essential for search engine crawlers to understand and index your website. Ensure these files are correctly configured and submitted to Google Search Console.
  • Redirects: Improper redirection from old WordPress URLs to new Shopify URLs can cause confusion for search engines and visitors. Double-check that all redirects are working correctly.
  • Content Duplication: Moving content from WordPress to Shopify might have inadvertently created duplicate content issues. Even if the content itself is identical, search engines may penalize you for having multiple versions of the same content on your website.
  • Analytics Integration: Ensure you have properly set up Google Analytics in Shopify to track and analyze website traffic accurately.

Remember, traffic fluctuations are common, especially after major website changes. It’s important to monitor your traffic closely over the coming weeks and use tools like Google Search Console to identify any further issues and address them promptly.
