How do you determine the list of keywords you want to optimise for?

Say your website is relatively new but there are certain keywords you rank Top 3 on Google. How do you select the keywords you want to optimise for in your given industry or niche?

Do you select high search volume, high competition or you start with more easy low comp keywords?

Is there a number of keywords u set out to rank for before you move on to next sets? Example 30 keywords till you get top spots then add another 30 more etc.

Start by analyzing the keywords you already rank highly for. Identify the common themes and topics within these keywords. This will give you a foundation for understanding what your website is currently perceived as being about.

Next, consider the overall search volume and competition for various keywords within your industry. While high-volume keywords can bring a lot of traffic, they are often highly competitive, making it challenging to rank for them. A more strategic approach might be to start with keywords that have a moderate search volume and relatively low competition, providing a better chance of ranking quickly and building momentum.

It’s also helpful to examine your competitors’ websites to see what keywords they are targeting. Look for keywords they are ranking well for, but that you are not yet targeting. This can reveal opportunities for differentiation and growth.

Rather than setting a fixed number of keywords, it’s more effective to prioritize a group of keywords that align with your business goals. Focus on optimizing for those keywords until you achieve your desired ranking positions. Once you’ve achieved success with those, you can then expand your keyword targeting to include additional relevant keywords. This iterative approach allows you to maximize your efforts and build a strong foundation for your website’s SEO.
